Media Regulation Essay




Media regulation is a highly contentious issue today, with more and more people consuming media is very different ways. In its essence, media regulation is narrowing the audience that can consume a certain media piece based on primarily age, but some other factors can also come into the equation. The aim of this is to avoid certain people from witnessing potentially damaging things in the media that they will be consuming. 

The BBFC are the main regulation/censorship body in the United Kingdom. They divide every film and TV show released in this country, as well as a large quantity of video games that have been released in the past, in addition to many music videos that are released. A primary reason that the BBFC are needed to regulate as appropriate is the fact that these types of media are present in the public domain. Many music videos will be played in cafes, gyms, hairdressers and therefore will leave a lasting impression on an audience if it is not appropriate. Video Games are also rightfully regulated by PEGI as well as the BBFC in order to work out which games are appropriate for certain users. After all, it's not good business for the games designers to receive complaints based around the fact their media was not appropriate for the individual consuming it. 

There is much controversy about age ratings, censorship, and regulation in modern media. Many people believe that all media should be accessible for all, and that there is little to no lasting effect on people who actually do consume these. Obviously, there is much debate surrounding whether media actually has a long, negative and lasting effect on people, with many blaming certain aspects of youth violence, such as the Columbine High School Massacre (1999) on violent video games as well as many other factors. 

Overall, Media regulation and censorship is a huge issue today regarding Media products.

Application of Theories to my Trailer (EXAM QUESTION)  Cameron Elliott The 5 theorists that I researched recently, analyse characters and roles more than the actual story ir narrative of a production for the most part. As my trailer did not contain an abundance of characters, many of the following theories will not apply. However, there will be some that are relevant to my trailer, as I'll explain throughout the course of my essay.  The first theory I would like to talk about is Propp's character theory. Propp argued that there were various character types in cinema.
